The Mugs in this collection are made to be ultimately simple and comfortable. They aim to display the surface patterns of the Damascus Porcelain as much as possible with little distraction from the form whilst still being as functional as possible. Walking the line between art and a functional piece.

The swirling patterns of the Damascus Porcelain are made by creating blanks of clay before throwing. These blanks are set up by using stained porcelain in differing layers and patterns. Depending on how the blank is set up, the patterns on the final piece will change. This offers a small amount of control for the first few visual layers of the piece; however, that control only goes so far. I can never truly know what the piece is going to look like after it’s been made, fired and glazed.

You can see the inspiration of molten crucible steel and more modern pattern-welded steel in the placement and subsequent movement of the porcelain layers across the entire piece
