This piece is thrown Damascus Porcelain. Using different colours of porcelain, I make up a blank of differing layers and patterns. When thrown on the wheel those patterns get swirled together from the rotation of the wheel. You can really see the movement and fluidity of the porcelain suspended across the piece’s form.
The swirls and patterns on the surface can be modified and influenced by how you make the initial blank of clay and how you set up the initial layers. Then, depending on how long the porcelain is on the wheel you can, only a little bit, control the level of marbling. But that control is not to rely on, I can never truly know what the piece will look like.
